40 Years of Providing Medical Care in Mozambique

The year 2024 marks 40 years of providing medical care in Mozambique. MSF has responded to various emergencies, disease outbreaks, and conflict for four decades in Mozambique. Our innovative approach to healthcare improvement has been a central part of our operational footprint in the country.

Since 1984, MSF has collaborated with local authorities and communities in Mozambique to respond to emergencies, delivering life-saving medical assistance to those affected by conflicts, natural disasters, and disease outbreaks and supporting the authorities in strengthening access to health care.

We’re very proud of the work we’ve been doing in Mozambique for four decades. But we’re also aware that there are still many challenges. Nathalie Gielen, MSF Head of Mission in Mozambique

While we mark key milestones on our 40th anniversary of medical care in Mozambique, where our team remains committed to the social mission of providing timely and effective medical assistance to those in need, we also view this moment as a crucial opportunity to reinforce our messages about the ongoing challenges in Mozambique.

Although we have made some progress in different areas in the past 40 years of providing medical care in Mozambique, other challenges that remain include HIV/AIDS, TB, Climate Change, Neglected Tropical Diseases, man-made crises such as the volatile situation that continues to escalate in Cabo Delgado, where hundreds of thousands of people continue to be displaced, and humanitarian needs remain dire.
