Lesotho has the third highest HIV prevalence in the world. An estimated 270,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS in the country, and 18,000 people die annually of AIDS-related complications.
In January 2006, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) launched a joint pilot programme to provide HIV/AIDS care and treatment, including antiretroviral therapy (ART), at the primary health care level in Scott Hospital Health Service Area (HSA).
